From micro to macro: Exploring the big picture in archaeology

ARCAS Virtual Conference

19 – 20 March 2021

Welcome to the ARCAS 2021 conference page, hosted by La Trobe University. Originally scheduled for January 2021, we have been required to postpone the ARCAS conference until March.

The year 2020 brought us many challenges and has certainly been a time to reflect on adaptability and resilience. The conference theme reminds us of the different lenses through which we can observe and interpret the world around us, and while our recent focus has been more inward and local, you are invited here to step back and consider a broader perspective to explore the past. Within this theme, we would welcome the inclusion of Indigenous Knowledges and an exploration of their intersection with Western approaches.

As archaeological scientists, we are often specialists, driven by our passion and focus for our area of expertise. We must, however, remember to contextualise our work in regional and global frameworks. Or perhaps we consider our approach more global and ‘top down’, considering science more of a tool to help understand the world, rather than a vocation. The trick is, of course, to move between these modes of hyper-focused particularism and low-resolution generalisations to find understandings that are true across many domains.

We hope that the ARCAS conference will provide a forum for researchers of all perspectives to share their research with the broader community and we welcome contributions from all our community, and especially like to hear from PhD students and Traditional Custodians.

The free and on-line nature will hopefully encourage our community to showcase the breadth of archaeological science research being pursued in Australasia, no matter the temporal or geographic focus of the work.

We look forward to receiving your abstracts and welcoming you to a virtual La Trobe University. Please stay safe!
